Although crafted with a compact casing that allows you to fit it under your desk, the Swingline EX12-05 Personal Cross-Cut Shredder's combination of a black body, silver bin at the front, top corners, borders of the entry slots, and button switches results in a sleek styling that you'd probably rather display it above the desk or atop a counter.
Of course, it goes beyond its aesthetic virtues. It can shred from 12 to 14 sheets of paper in a single pass, which is a lot since it is designed for home or small office use. Papers are cross-cut into ¼" x 1½" pieces of confetti rendering them unreadable, earning it a security rating of 3 according the DIN classification system.
You do not even have to open your junk mail to shred them. Simply insert them into the 9-inch wide paper entry slot and the machine will take care of the rest. You need not be concerned if there are paper clips or staple wires inside as the sharp and sturdy blades will take care of them.
There is also a separate slot for cutting CDs or DVDs, although these are not cross-cut but sliced into three pieces. Credit cards are also fair game for this shredder. There is a dedicated area for them in the center of the main or paper entry slot.
Both entry slots are fitted with cutter guards to keep your fingers from accidentally coming into contact with the blades.
The machine shreds sheets of paper at a speed of 10 feet per minute. Although the motor can overheat if shredding is continuous, a pilot lamp lights up as a warning and will only turn itself off when it is safe to resume shredding.
With the motor generating a noise level of 70 decibels, you can continue conversation while shredding.
Shredded papers fall into a drawer-type 5-gallon bin. The front of the drawer incorporates a huge window through which you can see if it needs emptying. A separate bin, which is removable, is provided for cut CDs and DVDs.
The Swingline EX12-05 Personal Cross-Cut Shredder measures 16" H x 9" W x 17" D. It weighs a rather heavy 11 pounds, but this helps keep it from tipping over.
