Designed for departmental use, the Swingline DX18-13 Cross-Cut Jam-Free Shredder is a medium-duty machine that can serve from five to ten users. Owing to its quiet operation, it can be installed and run in a common work area without disturbing the personnel within.
The "18" in the machine's name indicates that it is capable of cutting through 18 sheets of paper. Some users or reviewers even claim that it can actually handle up to 20 sheets, but that is probably because of the differences in the thickness of the pieces of paper.
Shredding papers into ¼ by 1¼ inches, the Swingline DX18-13 is classified as a Security Level 3 shredder according to the standards of the German Institute for Standardization or DIN, which is the acronym of the institute's German name. At this security level, the machine is qualified to shred confidential commercial documents.
Having an extra wide entry slot of 10 inches, you can easily introduced sheets of paper into the machine even without meticulously aligning them. This is because regular letter and legal size papers are only 8½ inches wide.
Apart from sheets of paper, the machine can also cut CDs and credit cards with ease. And if you left paper clips and staple wires on the papers, the cutters will tear them up as well.
With its Jam-Free technology, the Swingline shredder prevents jams instead of simply stopping the blades when they occur. It has three sensors that detect if you are trying to insert more than the blades can chew. If you do, an elongated indicator lamp in front of the entry slot lights up in red, otherwise the light turns green.
The shredders relies on a self-oil feature to automatically lubricate the cutters and thus maintain their peak performance and extend their operational life.
Shredded materials are gathered in a 13-gallon bin that is pulled out for emptying. Although it does not have a window, an indicator lamp on the shredder head comes alive if the bin is full.
