Most people have certain legal, business, or financial documents such as business plans, trade secrets, bank account or credit card numbers, and other financial data that can compromise them if they fall into the wrong hands. For this reason, it is always prudent to completely destroy any document containing such information before disposing of them. For private persons or small businesses needing only to shred a small volume of paper each day, a Rosewill RSH-407CB Cross-Cut Shredder will suffice.

The Rosewill RSH-407CB is a light- to medium-duty machine with a shredding capacity of seven sheets of paper in a single pass. Note, however, that the seven-sheet capacity refers to pieces of paper of average thickness. You may need to reduce this when shredding thicker sheets of paper.

Mounted at the top of the shredder is a four-way switch with the markings "Fwd", "Auto", "Off", and "Rev". When set to "Auto", the machine goes into standby mode. Its motor and blades will automatically run if sheets of paper are inserted into the paper entry slot, tearing them into small pieces of confetti. When the papers are cut, it also automatically stops running and goes back to standby mode. With a width of 8.65 inches, regular letter and legal size documents are easily introduced into the opening.

In addition to pieces of paper, the shredder's blades can also cut through staple wires left behind on the papers. There is also a section in the middle of the entry slot where you can insert credit cards for shredding.

"Rev" stands for reverse and it is used in the event of a paper jam. Sliding the switch to it reverses the rotation of the blades in order to eject the offending pieces of paper. "Fwd" for forward, on the other hand, is used if you want the blades to continually spin while inserting sheets of paper in succession.

The Rosewill RSH-407CB Cross-Cut Shredder has a three-gallon waste bin. It has a small round window allowing you to see if it is close to getting full. In case you forgot to take a look inside, though, the machine has a mechanism that disables the cutters if the bin is full.

The shredder stands almost 14 inches. It is over 11 inches wide and a shade less than 6 inches deep. It weighs 6.7 pounds.
