The machine is capable of shredding up to 12 sheets of paper in a single pass, reducing them into 55.0 mm x 5.5 mm pieces of paper that are totally unreadable and impossible to put back together, thus effectively keeping your confidential and sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands. At that size, the AmazonBasics AU1225XB qualifies as a Level 2 Security Shredder according to the criteria of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN).
Sheets of paper are inserted into the shredder via an 8.7-inch wide throat. Since most letter and legal size documents are 8.5 inches wide, there is enough wiggle room in the slot in case the papers in the stack are not perfectly aligned. To make insertion easier, the slot is angled. And to prevent dust and dirt from getting blown into the slot when it is not in use, it is fitted with a black plastic cover.
The machine also shreds credit cards and DVDs or CDs. Credits cards are shredded in the same slot as that intended for pieces of paper but guides indicate that this should be done in the center of the slot. DVDs or CDs, on the other hand, have their own special slot.
Rated as medium duty, the shredder can be used to process up to 600 sheets of paper daily at a maximum of 50 passes. To keep it from overheating, however, it automatically shuts down for 30 minutes after running continuously for 5 minutes.
As a safety measure, it is equipped with a sensor that shuts the blades if it detects foreign objects within the entry slots.
The black wastepaper basket has a capacity of almost 5 gallons. There is an oval window at its front through which you can see if it needs to be emptied. With an integrated handle, this is easily done.
